TECH UPDATE - 2016-02-13

by aking
When: Feb 13, 2016

2016-02-13

-- DONE -- All the Every Saturday items.

-- On Website: Disable “endowment” on home page [I deleted the linked image.]

-- On Website: Disable “endowment page & link to NBACF.org” [I could not find a page for "endowment." There is a support page (sophienburg.com/supportlinks/support) that links to nbacf.org.]

-- DONE -- Keva's computer was already set to print to the Savin as the default printer. It is working properly.

-- DONE -- Beverly's computer: Activate Microsoft Office 2016” prompt. ?? It directs her to her administrator… is that you? [Yes, but mortals can activate software.] How do we do that? [I did it and left a note on Beverly's desk.] Is that from license we recently purchased? [Yes. I never buy Microsoft Office for my own use, so I am unfamiliar with all the hoops that must be jumped through. I use the free, open-source OpenOffice.]

-- DONE -- Reception QuickBooks POS -- [Internal automatic backups are now copied to I:\QuickBooksPOSData-Backup-Reception at 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Drive I is backed up on-site nightly and off-site weekly. There are two versions of QuickBooks POS installed on this computer. I recommend uninstalling the older version unless there is some reason to keep it installed. ]

-- DONE -- Shop QuickBooks POS -- [Internal automatic backups are now copied to I:\QuickBooksPOSData-Backup-Shop at 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Drive I is backed up on-site nightly and off-site weekly.]

-- Kellie's Quickbooks data is stored at I:\QuickBooksData [Drive I is the server, so it is backed up on-site every night and off-site every week.]

-- Reflections “Handy Recorder” for offsite oral histories. Is there some way to incorporate this piece of equipment and connect to our computers? [The recorder can be hooked to a computer through a USB cable for reading the recorder's memory card or using the recorder as one of the computer's audio devices. There was no cable in the box, so I donated one of mine. Also, the recorder's memory card can be removed and downloaded with an SD card reader. Some computers have card readers, many do not. If someone wants to use the recorder, a few hours following instructions in the manual should get the person up to speed. The recorder's user interface is not very intuitive, which may be why the recorder was not used.]

TO BE DONE AS TIME ALLOWS:

-- Research Windows Server 2012 to see if the server can do scheduled or real-time backups of specific folders on client computers. This would be a more elegant solution than the scheduled backups I set up on the Reception and Shop computers for QuickBooks POS data. This also could provide a way to backup files that people insist on saving on their hard drives.

-- Sophos Installation/Update -- Make sure this is working on each computer.

-- Windows Update -- Make sure this is working on each computer.

-- Set up a wireless access point in the big room to improve wireless connections, such as for the microfilm reader.
